Le Pollet, Dieppe

This derives from two photos I took while strolling in Le Pollet in 2004. It was drawn with a 5B pencil. Le Pollet is the fisherman’s quarter of Dieppe. Artists such as Eugène Delacroix and Walter Richard Sickert drew and painted here.

Hoarfrost near Montélimar

The village on the hill is Le Poet-Laval (meaning ‘Hill in the Valley’), founded by the Knights Hospitallers in the 13th century. While walking one chill October morning, I was amazed by the crimson leaves, edged with hoarfrost, decorating the right-hand bush.

Avignon: from the Palais des Papes

I painted this using a combination of pen and watercolour to spell out more clearly the structure and tones of the town’s architecture, and the sight-lines leading back to the church. This is the view from the Papal Palace looking away from the River Rhône and its famous ‘Pont d’Avignon’.

Le Lac de Devesset

This is a popular northern Ardèche location for watersports, north of St.-Agrève on the D9. But when I was there in October 2006 there was hardly anyone about - hence I imported the windsurfer, yachts and couple walking their dog from other photos (the couple were originally strolling in Dieppe!).

Giverny: The Grande Allée

This and the following four paintings are based on photos I took in 1994 when on a day trip from Pont Audemer in Normandy to Giverny and Versailles. Except for the ‘Grande Allée’, which was largely completed in France, they were painted for the Eastbourne Festival, April 2009.
